A good poker player should have a good idea on what strategy to implement when at a certain poker table. This also means that the good poker player should avoid the common mistakes that most other players commit. Sometimes, these mistakes are simply irritating. But at other times, these mistakes are fatal.

The first mistake that a poker player can make is not taking the time to peg the playing styles of his opponents. The poker player, at the early minutes of the game, must be able to analyze the playing styles of his opponents. But after determining the opponents’ playing styles, the poker player must still avoid other common mistakes. And here are some of them.

Over-aggression

In certain games, when players don’t mind losing money (probably figuring out that gambling is all about losing money), raising right after the flop may not be a great idea, especially if one is holding moderately strong hands. Raising will not scare off such players. And bluffing will just pass over their head unnoticed. Raising and bluffing against players who don’t mind throwing away money are costly actions.

Getting involved in raising wars

Some poker games are dominated by players who are aggressive. That is, these players like to bet and raise. For these players, the act of raising gives them a fifteen-second fame. Thus, the betting and raising at such poker tables are not about winning the pot odds but about being involved in the action.

A player in the blind position is especially tempted to commit this mistake. The reason, perhaps, is because he has placed a required bet. And with such a bet, he feels that he should see the flop. This player should refocus and be critical about the value of his pocket cards. If he was not in the blind, would he still raise with such cards? If the answer is “no”, then he should just let go and treat his blind money as part of the losses.

Being too tight

In some poker games, a player will be playing against opponents who fear losing their money. These players fold often and only a few of them reach the river. Raises will also be rare. As a result, the pot will be small. With such a small pot, one will be convinced that betting will not be worth it. But with such a frame of mind, one has closed the opportunities to gain profits.

Therefore, when one is seated at a poker table with players who fold all the time and with a pot which is rather small, one should bet, even when one has moderately strong cards. One should not wait for premium cards. Winning small pots is better than not winning at all.
